At a Christmas Eve party, Clara’s godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer, who is said to possess magical powers, gives Clara a nutcracker as a present. But Clara’s brother Fritz is jealous and breaks the nutcracker, which the doctor hastily repairs.
When the party is over and everyone has gone to sleep, Clara goes downstairs into the living room and falls asleep with the nutcracker. Mice and rats invade the room and engage in a battle against the tin soldiers. All of a sudden, the nutcracker comes to life and rescues Clara. At the end of the battle, the nutcracker turns into a prince.
The prince takes Clara to the land of Snow and then to Candyland where the child, accompanied by the Sugarplum Fairy and her Cavalier, discover a world of happiness and fantasy.
